Australian Stuttering Treatment Centre
About Treatment
What to expect during your initial consultation
Your first appointment will be about an hour long. Your speech pathologist will discuss your concerns and priorities, do an assessment, and consider treatment options. Every child, teenager and adult needs a different management plan for stuttering.
Do I need to attend the appointment with my child?
Yes, if your child is under 16 years of age you will need to attend the sessions.
How long are treatment sessions?
Treatment sessions are normally one hour to begin with, and 45 minutes afterwards.
What is the parent's involvement in treatment?
For very young children, treatment typically involves a parent or caregiver being trained to do the treatment at home with the child. For older children, what parents do varies according to the type of treatment and the child’s age.
Is webcam treatment suitable for young children?
Yes, research has shown that telehealth is just effectives as going to the clinic for stuttering management. Children do not need to be seated in front of the camera for all of the treatment session.
